This usually happens because the wax has paraffin and chemicals in it. I buy my candles at http://www.CandleMiaBella.com and they are made from Palm and Veggies wax blend with NO paraffin or chemicals in them. I have been burning them for 4 years now and never had and soot on my walls.
Yes, it’s soot. Switch to candles made of soy or palm wax.
My daughter had the same problem in the last house where we live. It was almost comical. We lived there for 5 years and she always burned candles in her room. When we moved out, we noticed black stripes on the ceiling where the joists were. For some reason the soot concentrated right along the joists. It was horrible looking.
Sounds like soot. Wash wall with ammonia and hot water.
I had that problem and the only thing that worked was repainting.
I had the exactly same problem and had to repaint. I amost quit using candles completely. I found that by switching from ones made from petroleum wax and to candles made with natural vegetable wax – no more soot! You might want to give them a try to prevent the problem from happening again after you clean up your walls.
