Has anyone ever tried to make homemade candles?
Question:
Is it fun, easy, and worth the time and money? Also, can anyone recommend a good website to purchase a candlemaking starter kit. What are other things to look for in quality supplies.
Answer:
First off, I recommend not using paraffin wax because it’s so fricking hard to clean up. Use soy wax. It’s so much easier to work with and cleans up with hot soapy water.
Peak Candles has a really nice soy wax candle making kit. http://www.peakcandle.com/products/Soy-Container-Candle-Starter-Kit__K1004.aspx That will get you started. One caveat, though. I don’t like the Ecosoya Container Blend 135 wax it comes with. It “frosts”. It’s the worst soy wax I’ve ever used. However, the Ecosoya Advanced Container Blend is perfect. Call them up and see if they’ll substitute it. The 10 lb bags are the same price, so maybe they will.
The Advanced blend also work well for clamshell tart chunks. They snap apart easily and pop right out of the clamshells. I like making the clamshells better because I don’t need wicks and jars or a burning flame. It’s easy to make them in small quantities and my daughters LOVE them. Every time I go to their house, they’ve got a chunk melting.
And the best part is, you can make candles or chunks in just about any scent you like. You can buy 10 lbs of wax for LESS than the size of 1 large Yankee jar candle.
