Hello Candle Lovers!

Not long ago I belonged to some MLM ”Candle of the Month” program just to get their gourmet scented candles at wholesale. Each and every month I’d get a new fragrance delivered right to my door. Those candles were to DIE for. The scent throw filled an entire room with fragrance and that was without even lighting the darn things! I’d light one up in the living room and within minutes I could smell it all the way down the hallway and into the bedrooms. I’d always get comments on how nice my house smelled.

The beautiful crystal patterns of the wax were so unique, something not seen in plain old paraffin or soy candles. Unlike other candles that tunnel a hole down through the middle when burned, those gourmet scented candles created a beautiful wax pool that released every drop of fragrance. There was never any wasted wax.

But for crying out loud, it was costing me over $50 a month for membership! Hey, don’t get me wrong, the products were good, but so horribly over-priced. Plus, it was a waste of money if I didn’t like the fragrance that month. I had to blow the flame out on that deal and told them NO MORE!

Long story short, I figured out how to make my OWN gourmet scented candles – just like those expensive ones.
I’m doing a project and i need to know what they use in colored candles to make then that color

Answer:

Candle dye, and no, you cannot use crayons because they smoke. I might as well put this one to bed, too. No, you cannot use food coloring. Water does not blend with wax.

There are several different types of candle dye; chips, blocks and liquid. Liquid is more expensive, but it’s VERY concentrated and will last a long time. It also give the brightest, most intense color. The others, not so much. Be sure to buy the right candle dye for the type of wax you’re using.

Question:

like if you have a whole box full of unscented candles, can you make other candles by melting them down?
I know they sell that wax stuff or whatever it is at hobby lobby and other craft stores that you make candles out of.
But can you do the same thing by shaving the candle wax of other candles down?

Answer:

Sure, you can melt the wax, but you won’t know what kind of wax it is, therefore you won’t know how high to heat it. Candle wax is not always “just wax”. It’s very often a special blend and can also contain some additives. Temperature is important to eliminate “frosting” and it’s extremely important if you want to add candle fragrance oils. DO NOT use perfume. Fragrance must be added at a certain temperature so it completely binds with the wax and doesn’t create pools of oil in the hardened wax.

Wax is a lot like tempering chocolate. It needs to be brought up to a certain temperature. Then it must be allowed to cool to the right temp so you can add the fragrance. Then it needs to cool to the proper pouring temperature.

Also, regular paraffin candles shrink as they cool, so you’ll need to do a second pour.

Then you must also buy the right type of wick for the type of wax and the diameter of the mold. And no, you cannot use household string.

Q: Some candles smell nice when not lit, but when you light them, you smell nothing, while other emit a scent when burning. Is there a way to know the difference?

A: Because the wax and fragrance oil used are cheap and don’t have a good scent throw. There might not be very much FO in the candle, either. Aside from the glass container, Fragrance oil is the most expensive ingredient in a candle.

If you want really strong smelling candles, you can make your own. That way you can adjust the amount of oil used.

Even better, make candle melts. I’ve stopped making candles and now I just make melts. You can use them as soon as they’re hard and the fragrance fills up the entire house in just a few minutes. Click here to learn how to make your own candle melts.

Question:

I have this idea for unique scented items but I wanted to know how are the scents put into the items. Like what if I wanted to make lip balm or candles that smelled like fried chicken and mashed potatoes? (Not really but that sounds lovely.)

Answer:

There is a really cool e-book I download a while back called the Crafter’s Companion. It’s about making your own spa-type products like candles, bath salts and bombs, lip balm and a whole bunch of other stuff. It’s really well written. The author did a very nice job. Sign up for the free newsletter and it will tell you where to get the products to make your items like the tubes for the lip balm.

There is a website that sells weird fragrance oils. They don’t have fried chicken and mashed potatoes, but they do have several cuts of meat like bacon, ham, pot roast and more. It’s called http://www.saveonscents.com/ Go into Fragrance & Body Oils » Novelty Fragrances. Baby Diaper? Gross.

Question:

Is it fun, easy, and worth the time and money? Also, can anyone recommend a good website to purchase a candlemaking starter kit. What are other things to look for in quality supplies.

Answer:

First off, I recommend not using paraffin wax because it’s so fricking hard to clean up. Use soy wax. It’s so much easier to work with and cleans up with hot soapy water.

Peak Candles has a really nice soy wax candle making kit. http://www.peakcandle.com/products/Soy-Container-Candle-Starter-Kit__K1004.aspx That will get you started. One caveat, though. I don’t like the Ecosoya Container Blend 135 wax it comes with. It “frosts”. It’s the worst soy wax I’ve ever used. However, the Ecosoya Advanced Container Blend is perfect. Call them up and see if they’ll substitute it. The 10 lb bags are the same price, so maybe they will.

The Advanced blend also work well for clamshell tart chunks. They snap apart easily and pop right out of the clamshells. I like making the clamshells better because I don’t need wicks and jars or a burning flame. It’s easy to make them in small quantities and my daughters LOVE them. Every time I go to their house, they’ve got a chunk melting.

And the best part is, you can make candles or chunks in just about any scent you like. You can buy 10 lbs of wax for LESS than the size of 1 large Yankee jar candle.

Quesion: Hi, Im going to make some candles out of crayons. i have some questions.
1. can I melt the crayons in a pot on the stove?
2. i dont have any wicks. can i replace them with embroidery thread? or anything else? thanks.

Answer:

1) NO!!!!! You cannot use crayons for candles. Crayon wax is not candle wax. Just because it’s “wax” does not mean you can use it for candles. It’s the wrong kind of wax. You’ll get smoking and soot and they’ll smell horrible from the burning color pigments.

2) NO!!!!! You cannot use embroidery thread for wicks. Something as simple as candle wicks are highly engineered according to type of wax and diameter of the candle. Different waxes require different wicks. Larger diameter candles require thicker wicks.
