Can you make candles by melting down other candles?
Question:
like if you have a whole box full of unscented candles, can you make other candles by melting them down?
I know they sell that wax stuff or whatever it is at hobby lobby and other craft stores that you make candles out of.
But can you do the same thing by shaving the candle wax of other candles down?
Answer:
Sure, you can melt the wax, but you won’t know what kind of wax it is, therefore you won’t know how high to heat it. Candle wax is not always “just wax”. It’s very often a special blend and can also contain some additives. Temperature is important to eliminate “frosting” and it’s extremely important if you want to add candle fragrance oils. DO NOT use perfume. Fragrance must be added at a certain temperature so it completely binds with the wax and doesn’t create pools of oil in the hardened wax.
Wax is a lot like tempering chocolate. It needs to be brought up to a certain temperature. Then it must be allowed to cool to the right temp so you can add the fragrance. Then it needs to cool to the proper pouring temperature.
Also, regular paraffin candles shrink as they cool, so you’ll need to do a second pour.
Then you must also buy the right type of wick for the type of wax and the diameter of the mold. And no, you cannot use household string.
