Jar candles should only be burned for no more than a couple of hours. If the wax pool becomes too hot, you risk cracking the jar. Typically, when the wax pool goes from side to side and is about 1/4″ to 3/8″ deep, it’s time to blow it out.
Pillar candles should only be burned to within about 1/4″ to 3/8″ of the sides to prevent the creation of weep holes in the side of the candle from which hot melted wax will pour out.
He might want to consider a low wattage candle jar warmer or tart melter instead. If he plans on melting a jar candle, make sure the candle does not use a metal tab on the bottom of the wick. The metal can overheat and crack the jar.

Obvious question is why does the house not smell good ?
I would prefer to use a deodorising spray than scented candles , but if he does insist on the candle it should not be in any ones bedroom and if it is put on the stainless steel kitchen sink then when it burns to the bottom it cant set anything on fire. A plate is not good enough as the heat might crack the plate when the candle gets to the bottom.
