How To Make Palm Wax Candles

cover180x242

It’s time to make those candles now.

Hello Candle Lovers!

Not long ago I belonged to some MLM ”Candle of the Month” program just to get their gourmet scented candles at wholesale. Each and every month I’d get a new fragrance delivered right to my door. Those candles were to DIE for. The scent throw filled an entire room with fragrance and that was without even lighting the darn things! I’d light one up in the living room and within minutes I could smell it all the way down the hallway and into the bedrooms. I’d always get comments on how nice my house smelled.

The beautiful crystal patterns of the wax were so unique, something not seen in plain old paraffin or soy candles. Unlike other candles that tunnel a hole down through the middle when burned, those gourmet scented candles created a beautiful wax pool that released every drop of fragrance. There was never any wasted wax.

But for crying out loud, it was costing me over $50 a month for membership! Hey, don’t get me wrong, the products were good, but so horribly over-priced. Plus, it was a waste of money if I didn’t like the fragrance that month. I had to blow the flame out on that deal and told them NO MORE!

Long story short, I figured out how to make my OWN gourmet scented candles – just like those expensive ones. I’ll let you in on a little secret, IT AIN’T ROCKET SCIENCE! Click here and learn how make candles.

How to Design Your Home with Fall in Mind

Fall reveals a darker and colder world as we exit the summer months. To keep in step with this fluctuating season, it is important to make your home decor goals align with the time of year. Replicate popular colors you see outside in your autumn decor decisions. These colors include rustic oranges and reds, dark green shades, and lighter tones of brown. With the colder weather, bundling up at home is comforting. That is why autumn home dcor should be focused toward making the home as comfortable as possible.

Fall weather evokes bare tree branches, multi-colored leaves, golden hues, and rustic textures. Consider what aspects or popular autumn themes you associate with the most, and focus on these when considering decor additions.

Adding an autumn tablecloth will do wonders to enhance your dining room’s fall decor. Autumn colors are softer than traditional colors in July and August. These colors are commonly earthy oranges, reds or shades of light brown. With the autumn weather come baked desserts, hot casseroles and warm stews. Warmer inviting colors will suit this traditional autumn fare well. Employ an autumn tablecloth, runners or a new napkin set, and you’ll notice your dining room feels more like fall than it ever has before.

Filling glass bowls with pine cones or baby squashes at the entryway or living room will help evoke a desirable autumn ambiance. Another way to achieve a fall semblance is by filling your unused vases with pumpkin seeds and acorns.

Candle decoration is a common design technique in the living room. If you use glass vessel holders for your candles, an easy autumn tip is to fill them with dried cranberries or coffee beans to add a rustic look. Wicker baskets are a perfect fall addition. Arrange a rustic basket filled with Eucalyptus or dried flowers petals for a taste of autumn in the bedroom.

Utilize all the senses when implementing your seasonal decoration ideas. Candles freshen up the home with wonderful smells. Look for scented candles with pumpkin or apple pie aromas. Cinnamon is also a common fragrance of autumn dcor. Candles with hints of cinnamon will work great as your fall candles. Give generic candles a more seasonal appearance by wrapping them in birch bark or strips of cinnamon root.

Give your scented candles an autumn accent by turning an old lantern into a candle holder for your living room. Fire safety ordinances got you down? You can still make autumn scent a reality with fragrance. Fragrance burners produce scent by heating a wickless candle, thereby avoiding the hazardous flame.

Fall bedding is improved by simply redesigning some specific pieces of your bedroom set. Heavy throws give your bedroom a cozy feel. If you really want to enjoy the best in bedding, get a fine goose down comforter. Not only will it make your bed comfortable for the fall, it is the perfect addition to your winter bedding collection because of its amazing warmth. Making your home look more autumn-like is amazingly simple. Applying all the tips discussed here isn’t necessary to achieving home interior themes that you enjoy.

Slight changes such as the ones mentioned above will add touches of the fall season to your home’s decor. Don’t feel like you need to do them all. Simply remember what autumn meant to you when you were younger. This is an easy way to begin guiding the design change possibilities at your disposal. Just one key addition to your home decor will do wonders for adding an inviting autumn feel to your home.

Votive Candles Are a Great Place to Start Your Candle Making Craft
By Kaye Dennan

As with starting any craft, the first few projects are a bit of wonder. Until you become used to the products you are using, you often feel you are stumbling along making mistake after mistake. That is why, if are going to enjoy the candle making craft, we suggest that you start making votive candles.

These are surely one of the easiest candles to make and the most cost effective. Because they are small you do not need to buy a lot of wax and initially you don’t even have to complicate things with color or perfume. You can get the color you want by using colored glass containers and as for the perfume you can probably do without that, if you want to, until you are more experienced.

With a votive candle you are setting the wax directly into the glass container and basically the three steps are to warm your glass containers to 110° from a cold oven, secure your wick at the bottom of the container and melt your wax and pour it in. In reality, care does need to be taken to make sure the wick is straight as the wax sets and when melting the wax it should be done in a double boiler being aware of the fact that wax has a flash point. This is why thermometers to measure the heat so that there are used so that there are no fires when melting the wax.

Some very popular ways to use votive candles:

  • Wedding settings
  • Party settings
  • Dinner parties
  • Spa settings
  • The votive candle is one of the most popular candles used for decorative purposes. Although they can be beautifully perfumed, they look absolutely delightful in clusters and with other trimmings such as flowers, rocks, bamboos, soaps, pot plants and in feng shui settings. All these different transformations of the same type of candle have it right up there as one of the most popular.

You can’t beat them for wedding settings, either as table centre decorations or to adorn the cake table. They can be kept the traditional white or colored to highlight the bridesmaid color. The extra color can be added in the glass container, the wax, the supporting flower arrangement or trimmings on the glass. That is how much variety is offered using these lovely little candles. Using them for parties is very, very popular and setting them up in an array of shot glasses has taken the party scene by storm.

Around the home a grouping of 3 or 5 votive candles make a lovely display and there are the opportunities to have the same color or a grouping of mixed colors. The candle making craft is a very cheap one to pursue and a lot of fun can be had from making your own decorative candles.

Care For Your Candles and Prolong Their Life

    By Jo F Miller

Soy Candles burn for longer than petroleum based candles but did you know that by following two basic rules to look after you candle; that you can preserve its life and allow the flame to burn properly every time?

There’s nothing more annoying than spending a bit of money on a decent quality candle and then to find that the wax has tunneled and you can’t light the wick anymore even though the candle is no where near finished. Or what about when you’ve got puffs of black smoke filling your room? That’s hardly the type of ambience that you hoped your candle would create. But by taking a little bit of care for your candle, you should be able to enjoy your candle more and for longer.

Before you even light your candle, make sure that you trim the wick to about a quarter inch and you should avoid having clouds of smoke. If you find that your wick mushrooms, you should blow your candle out and trim the wick even more as the wick is burning too fast with not enough wax to slow it down. Before lighting your candle each time, trim the wick. If you’ve got a jar candle which is difficult to get a pair of scissors into, use your fingers to pinch the wick.

For the first burn of your new candle, there is a general rule to let the candle burn 1 hour for every inch that the candle is wide. So for a lot of the quality candles that come in jars, you’re looking at 2-3 hours for your first burn. This is to achieve what is known as a ‘melt-pool’ – where the candle has become liquidised all the way to the side of the candle. By doing this, you harden the wax and cause your candle to burn more steadily and slowly for following burns.

By doing these two simple steps, always trimming the wick and achieving a melt pool on your first burn, you should avoid problems with your candle tunneling. If your candle has a lid, always replace the lid to help keep the fragrance strong although never use the lid to put out your candle as you’ll end up with a black jar!

Also remember for any candle or wax spills, the following should remove the wax from surfaces every time. Use a hair dryer to melt the wax. Once the wax is liquefied, dab a piece of paper towel (maybe even double or triple up the thickness depending on the amount of wax to be cleaned). Continue to do this until all of the wax is removed. This works on wood surfaces, painted surfaces, metal surfaces and even carpets.

Enjoy your candles every time and get your money’s worth from your candle. A decent quality candle really will be worth its money – always check the burn time on the candle – if it doesn’t have a burn time stated, it may be one that will not last very long and therefore is not worth the money. Decent quality candles will burn well and keep their fragrance throughout the life of the candle.

Thinking About a Homemade Candle Business? Things You’ll Want to Consider

    By Jo Johnstan

So, you’re considering starting up a homemade candle business. Congratulations! What’s the next step? Below you will find venues that quite often offer instructional videos, courses and programs designed to assist you with important resources to begin and improve your business, as well as helping you stay up-to-date. Be sure to take in all of what they have to offer.

    1. Neighborhood craft stores
    2. Community centers
    3. Local libraries
    4. Colleges

However you choose to investigate, do not overlook the internet as it contains a wealth of information ripe for the plucking. It will no doubt have most of the answers to questions that will arise. As with any type of trade, the success of a homemade candle business depends upon: Are you willing to put forth the continual effort necessary to create and maintain a prosperous candle making business?

Because if you are you will need:

    1. To stay abreast of the latest design developments in the candle business in order to be able to continually create one-of-a-kind designs that appeal to both old and new buyers.

    2. To track expenses carefully…always have an eye open for reliable and cost effective sources for materials like soy wax, beeswax, paraffin, and cotton wicks.

    3. To keep up and implement the latest techniques for designing, coloring and adding fragrances and decorative pieces.

Plainly put, the main aspects of the homemade candle business are: You make your candles, you sell your candles and you get paid for your candles. Falling short in any of these functions will significantly reduce your chances of success.

To maintain a profitable homemade candle business, you must:

    1. Develop a base of customers that buys in volume, as well as pays their bills on time.

    2. Hold firmly to credit limits that you set for your customers…bad debts are a major demise for many companies, both large and small.

    3. Establish a collection procedure and stick to it without exception…monitor your receivables like a hawk.

    4. Evaluate new customers carefully and do not extend credit to those that are not credit worthy. Don’t be afraid to implement a “cash only” policy for new customers while they establish a track record.

Finally you must be very, very customer conscious. Know your buyers and what makes them tick. Ask them what they like about the way you do business and what you could do better…customers are a great source of business intelligence.

Creative Ways to Use Scented Candles

    By Patricia Roberts

Scented candles are very popular and they are a gift that is welcomed by most people. You may be wondering what you can do with a scented candle besides putting it on the coffee table and burning it. The answer to that is that there are many things that you can do with scented candles. This is especially true if you make your own. You can make the candles in just about any shape, scent and color you can dream up. This makes them ideal for many uses.

The first and most obvious use is as a gift. Scented candles can be tailored to fit any occasion. You can make black and orange candles for Halloween or red and green ones for the holidays. Try making them with pumpkin and evergreen scents respectively for an even greater holiday feel. Scented candles also make great Mother’s Day, baby shower and wedding gifts. You can give the women in your life a candle with their favorite fragrance.

When you need a little aromatherapy scented candles are the way to go. You can make them yourself and choose the scents that work best for you. If you want to relax you can make a vanilla or lavender candle. Even better would be combining these fragrances; or you can try vanilla and chamomile. If you are looking for a pick me up you can make candles scented with citrus or mint oils. Sweet basil is a good scent to promote concentration. When you are setting the stage for romance you can make a candle scented with rose oil or exotic jasmine.

Another use for scented candles is in a centerpiece for holiday gatherings. You can use a variety of other crafts supplies to construct centerpieces. The only limit is your imagination. Scented candles can be placed in drawers to give them a fresh scent, just do not light them. Placing an orange scented candle nearby when you are doing the dishes will give you the little lift you need to make washing dishes less of a chore. When you are trying to sell your house it is a good idea to burn a vanilla, cookie, or apple pie scented candle in the house as people are viewing your home. This will make people feel instantly at home.

If you are trying to find uses for the wax that is leftover when you get to the bottom of the candle there are several things that you can do. You can use a double boiler to meld down the left over wax and then dip pine cones in it. These make great fire starters for your fireplace. You can also pour the melted wax into mini muffin tins and make wax tarts for a tart burner. This way you get all of the scent and do not waste any wax.

Scented candles make a great gift for your friends and family. Making them is also a fun and relaxing hobby that you can do alone or with your children. By making your own candles you can customize the fragrance and color. There are many uses for them so get started today and see just how creative you can be.

In Defense of the Scented Candle

    Author: Thomas Freeman

The scented candle is a product which has remained a popular gift over many years. With more and more increased competition internally and externally, this method of home fragrance is under pressure, and it is within this article that these pressures are questioned – why should the scented candle be defended against such pressures and why the scented candle will continue to be just simply a perfect gift.

Interior design is a continually evolving business; new trends, new styles, new products. I present one example of this. With the ascension of the fragrance diffuser in recent years, the scented candle has suffered. The fragrance diffuser, which is also known as the reed diffuser, is marketed as a safer way to provide luxury household scenting, eliminating the fire hazard which candles present. The fragrance diffuser does provide varied advantage; aromas through this means can be deployed anywhere, in places where scented candles simply cannot reasonably be used; diffusers rule the workplace. But there is still a place for the scented candle in our homes. Any worries and fears over the use of candles in the home can easily be allayed. Most candles now come in non-flammable holders which do not fall over easily, and if used sensibly by keeping the flame away from anything particularly flammable, such as curtains, can be as safe as any other household object. When used properly candles can be a safe addition to the look and feel of your house – there is something unmistakably atmospheric about the glow of a scented candle as it fills the room with its essence.

A scented candle is another of those products which can be called a perfect gift; the appeal is universal. Such candles are atmospheric, soothing, the ideal gift for ‘her’. There is a reason why ‘smelly candles’ are at the top of many women’s lists this year. But scented candles are not restricted to personal presents, and hold as a successful home gift. From an interior design point of view, scented candles can be instrumental. The scented candle can provide the finishing touches, or can equally dominating the focus of a room depending on Candle styles and positioning. Fronting duel properties as a room scenting and supplementary lighting device, the scented candle already notches an advantage over other means of home fragrance. It should be noted of course that the scented candles main aim is that of fragrancing, not lighting, but the comforting glow of such a product really contributes towards a feeling of warmth and comfort and always needs to be considered. Another overlooked advantage includes the stylistic merits of the candle itself. The candle holder is an opportunity for designers to create something which can perform as a stylish home accessory, added flair to the design of the candle in a way which the fragrance diffuser is limited in – there are only so many ways fragrance oil diffusers can be visually displayed. For scented candles the possibilities are endless; candles in gorgeous glass holders, crafted ceramic bowls, modern designed flasks, an opportunity is given for the candle to become more a piece of art than simply a means of home fragrance.

Most importantly however, luxury candles cannot be beaten when it comes to inventive and specialist scents, the main reason why scented candles are used in the first place. Smell is a very powerful sense, strongly connected with subconscious feelings and memories. Room scents can help reaffirm such connections with your own home, or even to bring back pleasant memories from long before. Room fragrance is not just a pleasant aroma, or means to clear undesirable odours, but has a much firmer connection to the overall design and feel of a home. One particular brand which I would like to mention in this case is the Baobab Collection, which began operating in 2002. Tracing its roots back to Tanzania, this brand has selected scents which bring you straight into the African heartland. Exotic aromas such as Serengeti Plains, White Rhino and Madagascar Vanilla are truly unique, making a huge difference to the atmosphere of a room. These scents succeed in transporting you to the African plains, and physically look great in transparent glass containers. But this is just one example of the carefully crafted scent ranges available across the market, an illustration of how much choice is available in this highly competitive area. There is a reason why, even through increased competition in the home fragrance market in general, that the scented candles market remains strong, and it is the sheer quality of the goods out there.

Home Decorating For Autumn With Candles

    Home Decorating For Autumn
    By Matthew Sorrow

The crisp air and changing foliage signal the arrival of autumn, and with some easy and inexpensive ideas, you can use the colours and textures of the season to create a comforting and cosy atmosphere in your home. When choosing colours, let the outdoors be your guide by using deeper tones of red, orange, yellow, gold and green. When approaching autumn decor, heavier fabrics provide rich warmth, while accents that embody nature offer seasonal charm. The simple addition of a few coordinating pillows and a soft throw blanket draped across the back of a chair can provide a relaxed, inviting atmosphere.

A dried or silk garland of vivid foliage adds a natural touch when hung across a mantle piece or when framing a doorway. Groups of candles can provide a simple and evocative elegance by day, while their flickering candlelight can offer a soothing and gentle glow by night. String up some cinnamon sticks and dried cranberries to create a garland for your kitchen, and use bowls of potpourri or a simmering pot of savoury scents to fill your home with the aromas of autumn.

Stalks of dried wheat, small pumpkins and dried maize work well grouped together or as solitary decorations. Use silky ribbon to tie a spray of deep red berries around a thick white pillar candle. Pile some small, colourful gourds and few autumn leaves in a wooden fruit bowl, and then add some contrast and height with a few bundles of twigs tied with raffia. With a little creativity and some inexpensive accents, you can add welcoming, seasonal touches to your home decor.

Water Scale Prevention and Limescale might also interest you when helping your home being beautiful.

Cheap Ideas For Adding Autumn to Your Home
    By Lisa A Mason

Autumn is an easy and inexpensive time to do some seasonal decorating. All you have to do is take a shopping bag and a basket, gather up the kids, and go for a long walk…first in your garden, then around the neighborhood. If you are in an area without much natural foliage, go for a drive and find a nice woodsy area to walk in.

Have the kids collect interesting, pebbles, acorns, pine cones, and even colorful or unusual twigs. Pick a bunch of leaves in various shapes and colors, and careful cut a few sprigs of pine or other evergreens. With a bit of floral wire, you can make a decoration to hang on your door or over your fireplace, using nothing but pine boughs, twigs, and a few pine cones.

Bowls of acorns, gourds, nuts in the shell, etc. with nothing added but a bow in any fall color, will give your home that wonderful outdoor fall look. For an easy centerpiece on your table, place a small pumpkin on a bamboo mat, set a few colorful fall leaves around it, with a couple of small gourds, and add a handful of walnuts!

Do you want to add candles? Fill a small terra cotta pot with dirt or sand, cover with a bit of moss, and stick a candle in it. Just be very careful that your candles are far enough away from anything flammable! A safe way to do it is to hollow out a small pumpkin or gourd, make several half-dollar sized holes in the sides, and place a votive candle in it.
